How to Protect Ourselves from COVID-19: Messages and Experiences from Papua New Guinea

The Key Population Advocacy Consortium (KPAC) comprises members of Friends Frangipani, Igat Hope and Kapul Champions.  These are network of key population and people living with HIV whom collectively advocate for issuing affecting themselves and their families.

The COVID – 19 outbreak has caused immense stress and undermined psychological well-being. Many vulnerable individuals and their families not only got affected by covid-19 but lack shortages of food, money, water, medical care and support, illness and gender-based violence. The COVID – 19 pandemic affected services like no community outreach work, lack of accessing ART drugs, lack of socialization at churches or other social gathering or main market areas.  There were restrictions imposed on people not to access social, financial and economical services. Most of our health service providers were closed or did not allow people to access health services freely.  There were restrictions & limitation of people accessing the hospitals, the public transport came to a standstill which made it difficult for our communities to access health and transport services.

KPAC, with support from APCASO as the host of the APCRG Platform, embarked on documenting stories or events from individuals and groups sharing some of the great stories and experiences during COVID-19. They envisaged to capture stories and photos of individuals or vulnerable groups of people who used innovative ways to continue supporting individuals and groups during the pandemic crises.  KPAC wanted to captured individual stories of how they braved themselves to supporting someone who needed help or an organization that went out of their way to support those who really needed help and could not access their services.
